Hydroxycut is Recalled after reports of death, liver failure, and other risks
What is Hydroxycut?
Hydroxycut is a widely available weight loss supplement in grocery stores and pharmacies and Hydroxycut is popular among dieters and body builders. The company, Iovate Health Sciences of Oakville, Ontario, Canada reports that more than 9 million units of Hydroxycut products were sold in 2008 in health food stores, grocery stores and pharmacies. Although liver damage appears to be rare the FDA has recalled Hydroxycut after reviewing the reported death of an otherwise healthy 19-year-old male which occurred in 2007. The report also includes 23 cases of Hydroxycut associated liver toxicity identified in CFSAN Adverse Events Reporting System (CAERS) for the period 2002 to the present. A majority of incidents concerning hydroxycut have not been reported to the FDA leaving millions of consumers to be evaluated.
What are the Risks?
Liver injury resulting in liver failure. Symptoms can include jaundice and brown urine, nausea, vomiting as well as unusual tiredness, unexplained itching and loss of appetite.
Other symptoms that may indicate injury from using Hydroxycut include seizures, cardiovascular and other health problems.

How could this happen?
Hydroxycut was not pre-screened product by the FDA for use by consumers in the United States. The FDA has no authority to prescreen products which are comprised of ingredients which existed in the market before 1994. Hydroxycut's ingredients are mostly herbal which have existed for thousands of years meeting the requirements to not be pre-screened by the FDA before introduction to the market.
Authorities do not yet know which ingredients are specifically associated with the problems but agree that Hydroxycut is a common denominator.
